The Winery
‘In the whole of Cyprus there is only one winery that was built with absolute respect to the tradition of the region where it is situated. This is the Vasa Winery, owned by Pambos Argyrides, who constructed a small but model winery wholly from select local stone panelled with wood and featuring decorative doors and windows that bring to mind bygone times. The inspirer and creator of this doll-like "miniature" winery, whose total annual production does not exceed 18000 bottles, did not build this work of art in the heart of the village for the purpose of making money but to give an outlet to his passion for wine.’ comment by wine author, Yiannos Constantinou
Vasa Winery is a family-owned traditional estate situated in the village of Vasa Koilaniou, on the slopes of the Troodos Mountains, 25km from Lemesos. The winery has been home to four generations of traditional winemaking and is currently run Mr Pambos Argyrides and his family. For many travelers this winery is regarded as one of the most picturesque of the Cyprus wineries.
Mr Pambos took over from his father in 1993, initially making wine using older practices, until 1999 when the premises were fully renovated. The old buildings have been meticulously restored and expanded and the complex presently offers a great example of industrial use of traditional rural architecture in Cyprus, blending tradition with functionality. The building houses the winery, a wine museum, cellars and family living quarters which surround a stone built terrace. New construction is being carried out for premises that will include wine tasting (indoor) facilities and related services.
The winery is equipped with the latest technological facilities and together with the adjacent museum, capture two different eras of winemaking in Cyprus; a movement from the man-made earthen casket (pithari) to the stainless-steel tank.
The vineyards
The Argyrides family owns around ten hectares of vine yards, located in close proximity to the winery and part of the Laona region. Laona is within one of the four viticulture regions that have now acquired the right to produce wines bearing the WCAO (Wines of Controlled Appellation of Origin) label.
The vineyards' altitudes range from 850m to 1000m above sea level and include the imported varieties Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and the indigenous Maratheftiko.
Care, experience and dedication ensure that the Argyrides family applies the best planting and cultivation techniques to produce the finest fruit, as this is the most important factor in producing wines of the highest quality.
Marketing
The wines are distributed through a network setup with two other local wineries, around Cyprus and exports are carried out in small volumes to Switzerland and the US.
