Group Profile

The Hadjipavlou family has been associated with wine making more than any other group of people on the island of Cyprus. Born in 1798, Christodoulos Hadjipavlou was the pioneer in the development of the professional wine making industry.†He founded ETKO in 1844 remaining to date the oldest wine-making business in Cyprus.†ETKO was the first industry†to produce wine and brandy on an industrial scale (brandy was first produced in Limassol at a distillery that Hadjipavlou had imported from France in 1868). By 1947 the business had grown in size and the House of Hadjipavlou was divided into two companies: ETKO Ltd (which would produce wines) and Hadjipavlou Ltd (which would produce brandy and other spirits).

Since†1969 ETKO Winery operates from†its†Limassol site with an intake capacity of 40 million liters. The crushing facility takes one million kilos of grapes per day. Wine storage is also substantial and effectively accommodates more than 38 million liters of wine in stainless steel tanks, oaks vats, and glass bottles.

In the latter part of the 20th†century ETKO, as all the big wineries, concentrated in the bulk market of wine, supplying European and Eastern bloc countries with cheap wines. In the 1980s, the collapse of the Russian and other Eastern European markets was a great shock, both for ETKO and the Cyprus wine industry as a whole. In the case of ETKO, this upheaval led to a thorough switch from quantity to quality production. † To this end, ETKO built a new winery at Omodhos village in 1992, with the objective of producing high quality wines and by 2003 all of ETKO's wine production moved here. The winery was surrounded by some 70 hectares of privately owned new vineyards planted with imported promising varieties such as Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot, Riesling and Chardonnay.† The planting of vineyards with new varieties was undertaken, in line with ETKO's long-term plans to carefully create new and attractive wine variations. Olympus Winery is today a state-of-the-art facility that includes a large underground isothermic cellar with a maturing capacity of two million bottles of wine.

In 1999, ETKO expanded abroad by buying a winery at Episkopi Tegeas of Peloponnesos, Greece. The winery, named Olympus Hellas was renovated and modernized in accordance with the latest European Union standards. Olympus Winery Hellas is producing both red and white wines (from white Moschofilero and red Agiorgitico) with Appellation of Origin.

The ETKO Group serves predominantly the Cypriot and Greek markets and exports a range of wines to mainland Europe and†the U.K.. In terms of importance in the world markets, Commandaria remains the†most promising wine on which to build a strong promotion program.†ETKO has recently received certification according to Standard EN ISO 9001:2000 and the HAACP Food Safety Standard (ELOT 1416).

Professional vineyard management, state-of-the-art technology, the utilisation of foreign oenologists as advisors, and the consistent pursuit of excellence in the finished product throughout its three wineries are the key elements that have built ETKOís strong national and international reputation.
