2011 Cyprus Gourmet Wine Awards The Londa Hosts the 2011 Celebration of Cyprus Wines and Food Already a Mecca for the Limassol social set and for jazz fans, the Londa Hotel is now set to become a haven for lovers of food and wine. The first Wine Awards to be made by the fledgling “Michelin-of-Cyprus” organisation The Cyprus Gourmet were presented at the hotel in March last year. Now an expanded event is set for Friday May 13th, under the banner “A Celebration of Cyprus Food and Wine”. Firstly, the 2011 Cyprus Gourmet Wine Awards will be made at a presentation in the Alpha Omega Suite of the Londa from 6.00 to 8.00 p.m. The country’s top winemakers will be present to hear which ones have got Cyprus Gourmet Seals of “Recommendation”, “Excellence”, or “Gold”. Award winning wines and canapés will be served. Entry is free, but space is limited so reservations are requested by telephoning the Londa. Secondly, The 2011 “Cyprus Gourmet” Dinner will take place on the same day, Friday 13th May at 8.30 pm prompt. It will offer a superb three course epicurean menu, created by the Londa chefs from 100% Cypriot ingredients, served with our 2011 Award Winning Wines. The Speaker and Guest of Honour, will be the great French wine personality, Mr Michel Picard, a good friend of Cyprus wine and food who, will talk about his 12 year long love affair with this country. The cost per person inclusive of the Award Wining wines served is €45.00 per person. Reservations should be made at the Londa, telephone 25 86 5540. The Cyprus Gourmet was created by Cyprus’s longest-serving food and wine commentator Patrick Skinner three years ago to encourage food and wine producers and related business to improve standards, encourage excellence and reward those providing good value. It spreads the word through its wine and food awards, website, magazine, electronic Newsletters, information services and syndicated newspaper articles. Awards for the top Cyprus wines are made on an annual basis, and food awards are made from time to time through regular evaluation and review. The development of the Cyprus Gourmet concept has now been entrusted to a new company, which will bring in more talent: reviewers, tasters, designers and publishers. Among the developments will be the creation of an Advisory Board of leading men and women in many walks of Cyprus life, and a Club for members of the public, offering considerable financial and other advantages. As for the 2011 Wine Awards: “They are related directly to what the consumer likes and can buy’, says Patrick Skinner. ‘The awards we shall make on 13th May at the Londa will only be for wines people can go out and buy NOW’. The first stage of judgment was by getting votes from the public through media, personal contacts, Emails and correspondence. The second and final evaluations have been made by professional panels whose members are resident in Cyprus. All wines evaluated had to be purchasable from retailers or wineries on 31st January 2011. “We are regarding the Londa as Cyprus Gourmet’s Limassol habitat”, concludes Skinner, “And, if as we are sure it will be, our first dinner celebrating the good food and wine of Cyprus is a success, we shall organise further tastings and epicurean events at the hotel”.
