The winery

It was Mrs Herodotou who, in 1986, decided to begin making her own wine and a couple of years later managed to persuade her husband to set up their own winery in Omodos, Mr Herodotou's birthplace. Omodos forms part of the cluster of villages known as ‘krasochoria’ (wine villages) and Mr Herodotou forefathers are known to have been wine producers in Omodos at least as far back as 1825.

Following the couple’s initial steps, the winery grew and moved in 1995 to its present premises where Linos (the Greek word for a wine press) earned its reputation as a dedicated regional winery well suited to offering wine tasting and introductory sessions for wine making and the indigenous local varieties. In addition there’s a small cottage industry on the premises producing delicious homemade sweets, so visitors can also purchase a few ‘take home gifts when they visit, along with a case or individual bottles of wine. The family is justifiably proud not only of the long tradition they carry but for the way they have adapted to the enormous changes that have occurred in the art and manufacture of the wines.

Mr Erodotou’s major concern relates to improving the quality of the wines he produces, based on the experience he has gained so far, concentrating on the use of more dynamic varieties and improved varietal blends. Wine production is currently at 200,000 bottles annually and Linos Winery has recently secured a HACCP certification.

Vines

One noteworthy characteristic of the winery is that the owners grow all the grapes required for making their wine, in a 25 hectare vineyard that is situated close to the winery. The soil and microclimate of the region have favored the development of vine yards for centuries. Mr Erodotou concentrates on varieties that he regards as best suited to the terrain, such as Mataro and Maratheftiko. His latest concern is to introduce bioculture on his 22 hectares of vineyards, with the approval of one of the recognized international organizations that issue the relevant certificates.

Wines

Omodhos is home to the winery, and the area surrounding this village has over the years become synonymous with the Cypriot winemaking business. Linos winery offers a range of five labels focusing on blends of Mataro, Grenache and Mavro varieties for the red wines. A white dry is made from a combination of Xynisteri and Riesling varieties.

Marketing

The owners distribute through their own subsidiary company and their wines can be found in selected restaurants as well as in a nuber of supermarket chains and wine shops.

The winery exports to the UK, Switserland, Belgium and the US (more specifically to New York). They are eager to increase their exports.
