Winery

Nelion winery is found at Pretori (Paphos district), a village adjacent to the "Krasohoria" region (wine villages). The name of the winery is a combination of the first names of the Ioannou couple (Neophytos and Eleni). The owners started producing wine using modern technology back in 1996 in a village house and moved to the current building in 1998.The winery is small, producing about 30,000 bottles annually but it is neat and attractive with a tidy cellar in which bottles are nicely laid out along with a number of 300-litre oak barrels.

Since its opening in 1998 this fine example of home crafting, boasts great attention to detail creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Nelion is set high above the main road, in the center of a vine producing region at an altitute of 700m and is a major attraction for tourists and visitors who wish to enjoy a wine experience in the Cypriot countryside. This is a place where small groups of visitors can find out more about the actual process of wine making and also view some artifacts, collected from a by gone age, all of which, have been handed down through generations of local wine makers.

The Vines

The winery owns 2.5 hectares of grapevines and additionally buys grapes from 4-5 long term partners, mostly from nearby vineyards at Pretori.

Wines

Nelion produces 10 different wines, a broad range for the size of the winery butsome labels are extremely interesting and attractive. One such example is the Cinsaut, the only Cypriot wine made from this variety. Next to this stands out the Muscat Hamburg, a sweet wine with a flowery aroma, among the few of its kind vinified in Cyprus.

Marketing

The company distributes its wines to a number of taverns, restaurants, and wine shops in Paphos, while it also sells a significant quantity of wine at its premises.

Prizes

Cyprus Wine Competition (2007)

Silver medal for its Cabernet Sauvignon of 2006

Visits to the winery

Opening from 10am until 7pm in the summer months and between 9am and 5pm during winter. The place is nearly always busy with visitors, most of whom, make the rather pleasant drive up from Paphos, and Limassol to stock up on a few bottles or cases of the Nelion wines.
