The winery

The winery is located at Kilani, a village within the “krasohoria” (wine villages) of Limassol, at a distance of 40 km from Limassol and 125 km from Nicosia. Ayia Mavri was founded in 1983 and was the first among the many regional wineries that were established during the past twenty years. It is owned by Mr. and Ms. Ioannides and is the product of the couple’s passion towards wine and preserving the traditions of their home village. Yet, the history of Ayia Mavri winery goes back a few generations at the times when the owners’ grandparents turned their own grapes into wine and zivania. Following in their footsteps, the Ioannides couple continues the tradition using new technology and expertise. Its modern winemaking and storage facilities include a pneumatic press, stainless steel tanks, chilling equipment for cold fermentation and stabilization, a bottling plant and temperature-controlled underground cellars for barrel ageing in French oak casks. Ayia Mavri winery produces about 50,000 bottles annually, a small volume which the owners see as an advantage for maintaining wine quality to high standards.

The winery building houses also a small exhibition area where one can see items used in traditional winemaking by the villagers of Kilani.

The Vines

Vine yards in this area normally date back hundreds of years and until recently every dwelling at Kilani housed a small winery with its owner/grower fully equipped for the production and transportation of wine to the consumer. Ayia Mavri owns a vineyard of about 4.5 hectares which is located at an altitude of 1.100 meters, growing the indigenous varieties Mavro and Xynisteri as well as a few imported varieties including Cabernet, Grenache, Carignan, Mataro, Riesling and Chardonnay. At this level, the climate and soil conditions are ideal for the production of quality wines. Additionally, grapes are brought in from other Kilani vine growers, with whom long term relations are maintained.

Wines

Ayia Mavri produces a number of different labels (no less than 12), in the pursuit of quality wine products.  The most celebrated and frequently awarded wine of Ayia Mavri thus far is Moshatos, a sweet white wine first produced in 2004 and one that is rated high by wine experts.

The market

The winery distributes its products only in selected supermarkets and wine shops of Cyprus. Small volumes are occasionally shipped to the UK and the owners are keen to expand export volumes for their highly accredited wines.
