The Winery
The winery was founded back in the late eighties as a result of the passion and love that a few friends had for theCyprus wine heritage. Mr. George Trypatsas (the current sole owner) started the venture with a clear vision to produce wines of premium quality based on a blend of local and premium, imported varieties. The winery is located on the slopes of Kalo Chorio, just 30 kms from capital Nicosia and is made of a unique architectural style that was recently upgraded to include a room for wine tasting and a shop for wines and traditional food products, welcoming visitors daily (except for Sunday). The winery consists of a two level structure that includes modern winemaking facilities utilizing gravity in the process of transferring the must to the wine tanks without the need of pumps. An extensive underground cellar is used for keeping bottled wine and for aging in fine French oak barrels. The winery is capable of producing about 170,000 bottles of wine annually.
Vine supplies
Achieving premium quality in a wine begins in the vineyard. As a result, the company owns a carefully managed vineyard of 3 hectares and grapes are also procured from selected growers in Koilani, Omodos, Kyperounda and as far as the Paphos area. Quality in wine making is safeguarded by long term contracts with its suppliers and continues with strict monitoring during the wine making process.
The wines
Aes Ambelis wines are skillfully crafted using methods that balance tradition with the latest developments in wine making. Aromatic complexity is a key element in wines and this is highly achieved by aging the red wines in fine new French oak barrels and cellaring the bottled wine in underground cellars. The company produces white and red wines from prime imported varieties, either on their own or blended in with Cypriot indigenous varieties. Recently, it has launched to the market two very good sweet Muscat wines that were produced in 2003 and 2004 and have matured in oak barrels with an intense aromatic character.
The markets
Local distribution is carried out by a contracted independent distributor. Aes Ambelis is the selected house wine in five star famous Cypriot hotels such as Le Meridien and the Four Seasons in Limassol. The company also exports to Switzerland and the UK.
