Company Profile

Photos Photiades Breweries Ltd is one of the two major brewing companies on the island, operating a state of the art brewery that could well be rated among the most technologically advanced by international standards. The company is today proud to have been the first ever to produce (under license) Carlsberg outside Denmark and a frequently awarded Carlsberg brewery worldwide.

The company was officially formed in 1963 and some years later it took over the business of M. Ch. Platanis & Co Ltd who owned the oldest brewery in Cyprus, the Leon Brewery that was established in 1937. In 1968 the Company was granted the license to produce Carlsberg beer in Cyprus and at the same time the Leon beer production line was terminated, only to be re-launched four decades later with an even greater success.

In the past 40 years, the Company has produced Carlsberg beer with great success turning it into the leading beer in Cyprus, with a market share that has grown to more than 50%. Together with Leon beer, Photiades Breweries commands today nearly 60% of the local beer market. Photos Photiades Breweries prides itself on its dedication to quality an attribute rewarded initially in 1997 when it was granted the top ranking of license breweries in the Carlsberg quality index. This success was repeated again in the two consecutive years of 2005 and 2006, an acknowledgment to the company’s dedication in producing quality Carlsberg beer, greatly accredited to the high levels of production monitoring that surpass many Carlsberg breweries around the world.

Being the oldest and one of the most successful Carlsberg breweries worldwide were major factors in granting Photos Photiades Breweries the right to brew and market Carlsberg beer in Greece. Since 1998, beer production for both the Cypriot and Greek markets takes place in the brewery of the company in Nicosia. Renovation works for the new, state of the art factory were completed in the year 2000 and helped to raise the brewing annual capacity to 30 million liters.

Photos Photiades Breweries Ltd forms part of the Photiades Group of companies, one of the biggest organizations on the island, which includes beverages production and distribution, real estate business, financial services and the Photiades Foundation, a Charity, Scientific and Cultural Institution.

LEON beer - the story

LEON was initially produced in 1937 as the first ever Cypriot beer by the brewery of Mr Christodoulos Platanis and for more than a decade it remained as the only local brew. In 1962, Mr Photos Photiades joined the company as a major shareholder and in subsequent years took over completely, buying out the initial shareholders. In 1967 an agreement was signed with Carlsberg for the production of the brand in Cyprus. This development led to the termination of LEON production in 1968, just a year before the brewing of Carlsberg begun.

Around 40 years later, in June of 2003, Leon beer was re-launched, only to be brewed now in the premises of one of the most advanced breweries in the world. The beer is based on the same initial all malt recipe made just from barley malt, hops and yeast and it is characterized by its honey-golden colour, its fruity like aroma and the rich, strong taste with the pleasant aftertaste.

LEON beer is a top quality product that is brewed using the very high standards of raw material selection and processing as Carlsberg beer and conforms to the well known German purity law, the Reinheitsgebot. Three types of the highest quality malts are used for making LEON - barley, dark roasted barley and caramelised malts all blended according to the LEON recipe to provide a malty sweetness and  body to the final product.

LEON is brewed using hops of the highest quality. Hops of the TETTNANGER variety are grown in the Tettnang region of Germany, a place known for its top quality hops. The variety belongs to the category of noble hops, a term that traditionally refers to four varieties of hops which are low in bitterness and high in aroma. Each one of them is named for a specific region or city in which they were first grown or primarily grown.

A unique type of yeast is used that has been developed in co-operation with one of the best laboratories worldwide and involves the mixture of several type of yeast. The selected yeast is exclusively used for LEON and is the key factor for the development of a rich blend of esters which in turn give that extra fruity flavour and aroma to the beer.

Water on average makes up around 95% of beer and its quality is of utmost importance in producing any beer. At Photiades brewery, water is pumped in from well monitored sources including privately owned boreholes and through the use of latest technology equipment this is purified and softened.

Its copper coloured packaging design demonstrates the island’s culture that links copper to the history of Cyprus and reminds us of the material that fermentation tanks were initially made from.

Within a period of three years, LEON beer managed to penetrate in the local market, rated high among the tourists and today commands a market share of 3-4% ranking third behind Carlsberg and KEO beers with a production volume of around 1.5 million litres. Photiades management is now putting great efforts to promote the product in foreign markets, especially within the EU.

Carlsberg – Probably the best

The story of Carlsberg beer started in 1847 in Valby, a small hill town overlooking Copenhagen. Captain J.C.Jacobsen launched Denmark’s first lager beer that was named after his son ‘Carl’ and the ‘berg’ which means 'on a hill'. A breakthrough in beer production came around in 1883 at Carlsberg's Central Research Laboratories when Emil Christian Hansen developed a method for propagating pure yeast. The yeast, named Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis was given freely to the world and the use of this pure yeast culture was a major technological advance that revolutionized the brewing industry.

In 1967 Mr. Photiades was granted the first ever license to produce Carlsberg Beer in Cyprus becoming the first worldwide brewery outside Denmark to produce Carlsberg Beer, opening the way for other countries to follow. Carlsberg Beer was launched into the Cypriot market in 1969 and quickly gained market share to become the market leader. Carlsberg is today the No1 selling beer in Cyprus, with over 51% of the total market and one of the fastest growing beer brands worldwide. It is a premium quality lager, conforming to the Reinheitsgebot Law and is positioned as a beer for the active and energetic consumers, frequently sponsoring international sports and music events.

To this day, its famous all malt recipe still comprises of malt, hops and water. The malt and hops are still sourced and selected from Denmark, to form the essence of the beer’s unique smooth and refreshing character. The same type of yeast, originating from the Central Laboratories in Copenhagen and multiplied in the quality control laboratories of each brewery, is used in every CARLSBERG Brewery around the world.

The Carlsberg production process, from fermentation and pasteurisation to bottling and kegging strictly adheres to guidelines and quality control standards set out by Carlsberg Breweries International. Carlsberg breweries worldwide are all governed and constantly monitored by on-site Quality Control Sections, established to ensure that the beer produced is always of the highest standards and of a uniform quality and taste.
