The Wine Museum

Composer by profession, Anastasia Guy was born and raised in the village of Erimi. As a musician she has always shown a genuine interest in history which is portrayed through her music work and reflected in her words ‘combining music with history and poetry is one thing in life that I have a true passion for’. In 1990 she inherited a large stone building at Erimi, and following deep thoughts she decided to turn it into the Wine Museum of Cyprus. The Museum started operation in November 2004, after 6 years of hard work in restoring, expanding and decorating the 150 year old stone building. Originally the building was an inn, where the wine merchants from the wine villages of Lemesos and Pafos used to meet, and spend the night on their way to Lemesos main market. It is therefore quite certain that wine was enjoyed in quantities in the building for over a century.

Erimi village is situated at the crossroads of the wine routes leading to the mountains and on the old road between Limassol-Paphos, just a few minutes away from the archaeological sites of Curium and the Apollo Hylates Sanctuary.  One of these famous routes leads to the nearby Kolossi Castle, a medieval “Commanderie” (Headquarters) of the Hospitaller Knights that gave the name to the Commandaria wine first produced by them. Interestingly, Erimi village is famed for the recent archaelogical evidence that supports a 5.500 years history in Cyprus wine making. Researchers examined chemical signatures in 18 of the Erimi jars. A dozen showed traces of tartaric acid, a key component of wine, proving, according to the scientists that the 5,500-year-old vases were used for storing wine. With a narrow mouth, a wide body and a pointed “nipple base,” the jars, which could hold 22 to 25 litres of wine, are the oldest of their kind in Europe. This evidence means that the oldest wine traces in Europe are found here, at the village of Erimi.

The Cyprus Wine Museum, using traditional and contemporary methods presents a journey through centuries of Cyprus wine history.  Ancient jars and vases (on loan from the Cyprus Museum), medieval drinking vessels (on loan from the Pierides Museum of the Laiki Group), the private collection of Anastasia Guy, old documents and instruments illustrate how wine was produced, stored and enjoyed in the past.  Photographic backdrops and audiovisual equipment bring all aspects of wine making to life, from cultivation to production.
