The winery

Gaia Oinotechniki is based at Agios Amvrosios, a picturesque village in the krasochoria region (wine villages), approximately 27 km northwest of the town of Limassol at an altitude of 600 meters. Established in 1987, it was one of the very first regional wineries and the leading grower and producer of organic wines in Cyprus. The small winery that was built on family inherited land, begun in 1988 with just one label and has grown today to an annual output of 120,000 bottles, delivering to the market five different labels of quality regional wines. The company has, since its formation, earned a reputation as an ecological winery due to its environmental orientation and the great concern regarding the hygienic aspect of wine making. The ecological character was passed down to the vine and wine making processes from the owner, Mrs Ioanna Papanyiotou, a known active supporter of the Ecological movement and currently the spokesperson of the Cyprus Green Party.

Gaia was the first winery to receive a bio-certification for its vineyards and ever since it applies the certified programs ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and ISO 14001, of the Cyprus Company of Certification for the management of quality, environment, hygiene and safety of foods. It is a pride for the winery to be a pioneer in applying the ISO 14001, a certification that gives the requirements for environmental management systems, carried by organizations wishing to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner.

The vineyards

Gaia winery manages around 6 hectares of family owned old and replanted vineyards, located close to the village of Ayios Amvrosios. These are cultivated with the indigenous mavro and the imported varieties of cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and carrignan.  The vineyards are bio-cultivated according to the EU Regulation 2092/91 giving organic grapes for the three wines that bear the special bio-logo on their labels. The license to use the "Lacon" logo is granted after inspection by an organization for the control and certification of organic products, accredited and recognized by the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. This logo is a certification to the consumer as to the biological (ecological) origin of the grapes used for the wine making.

The wines

The winery’s pride rests with its three organically certified wines. The first Cypriot wine from certified grapes of biological cultivation came out in 1992 by the name "SALOMI" (dry red wine) followed in 1993 by the rosè "OIANTHI" and in 1994 the "KYLIX" (dry red mature old wine). The winery also produces two non-organic wines which although not bearing the Lacon bio-mark, they are produced from vineyards that are closely supervised by the winery owners with standards of cultivation set high.

Marketing

Distribution is carried out by the company’s own vehicles that cover the whole of Cyprus, supplying hotels, large supermarkets and specialized wines stores. The company is keen in building long term trading relations in foreign markets, especially in promoting its range of organic products.
