The Winery

If one is to name a place that is closely tied to the recent history of Cyprus wine making, then Ktima Mallia is certainly a name to pick.† Owned and managed by the KEO Group, Mallia winery was established in 1928, just one year after KEO company was formed.†The decision to construct the winery was taken by the Board of Directors, chaired at the time by N.P. Lanitis and was based on the advantages its location offered, being in the heart of the Cyprus vine yards. The winery is found at the entrance to the village, overlooking the picturesque southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains†laid with a blend of young and old vineyards, Mallia winery has for decades served hundreds of local vine growers as their outlet of their production thereby acting as an important source of income for the rural economy of the region.

It was in 1993 that KEO management, headed by Dr. A. Zambartas, set the foundations that aimed in subsequent years to turn Ktima Mallia into a model regional winery resembling the large wine Estates of the US or the French Wine Chateaux. The ambitious plan of the past 15 years represents both the islandís†tradition in winemaking and the development of new technological viniculture and vinification processes. In this context, around the historic buildings new, well designed extensive vineyards were planted combining the fertility of land and the favorable microclimate. In the meantime the company refurbished the installations and buildings of the historic winery while respecting and preserving the architecture and tradition of the original buildings.†Close to the winery, a huge, British made power generator of the 1930s that used to give electricity to the winery and the village still stands in good condition, reminding us of a bygone period.

Today, Ktima Mallia is among the largest of the islandís regional wineries with an annual† capacity of around 3 million bottles and significant innovation in vine production and wine making. The traditional vinification methods are well adjusted to modern technological processes and new equipment such as stainless steel vats, modern pneumatic presses and aging tanks help to create the new, high quality KEO wines.

Vines

Between 1993 and 1996, an area of 70 hectares around the winery was carefully planted with new vineyards to allow mechanical harvesting. The composition of these vineyards is particularly diverse, for it includes both indigenous and imported varieties. As regards the indigenous varieties, apart from the common Mavro and Xynisteri, it is worth noting that KEO made an effort to revive forgotten Cypriot varieties that had been marginalized. For historic reasons, it needs to be said that the most promising indigenous variety of Maratheftiko, came to existence due to the sustained efforts of the technical team at Mallia winery. The organized maratheftiko vineyard of 2.5 hectares is among the largest in Cyprus and over the years it has given a number of valuable and interesting results regarding the techniques of producing good quality maratheftiko grape for vinification. Regarding imported varieties, Mallia vines are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Lefkada, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Wines

The new vineyards at Mallia gave their first wines in 2001. KEOís new labels, such as the Riesling, the red and white Ktima KEO indicate the wineryís effort to bring out a new generation of premium Cyprus wines. Internationally known varieties and rare indigenous grape types are blended to produce two unique brands bearing the name, KTHMA KEO, now being the flagship of the KEO wine portfolio, which is entirely vinified in the Mallia winery. All the winemaking parameters for the creation of high quality wines that meet the consumerís demands can be found in Mallia which according to European Union directives, are categorised as Limassol Regional Wines.
